ADHDgender

From MOGAI Wiki

ADHDgender is a neurogender related to one's experience of ADHD, though specifics may vary. It is similar to the gender ADHDnurix.

Alternate Names

  • ADDgender (for people with ADD/Inattentive ADHD)
  • VASTgender (not to be confused with gendervast)

Etymology

ADHD is from the acronym for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, with the common suffix -gender. VAST is a proposed alternative for ADHD that stands for Variable Attention Stimulus Trait.

Pronunciation

/ay-dee-aych-dee-jen-der/

Definitions

  • A neurogender concerning ones affected by ADHD, whether formally diagnosed of the condition or not. ADHDgender is not ADHD as a gender, but rather is a gender so heavily influenced by ADHD that one's gender and ADHD cannot be unlinked. - Oog22, 2020[1]
  • A gender that cannot be extricated from one’s ADD/ADHD. The gender can be heavily affected or part of one’s ADD/ADHD, but is not ADHD as a gender itself. They are however very interlinked. Exclusive to those with ADHD/ADD. - idvault, 2020[2]

People who are ADHDgender may feel that their gender is heavily influenced by their ADHD, that their experience of gender is influenced by it, or simply that their ADHD affects how they interact with their gender. For example, a gendervoid ADHDgender person may feel they are gendervoid because their ADHD means they can't focus on feeling their gender, or an ADHDboy may feel their boyhood is enhanced by their hyperactivity.

Because people without ADHD cannot have a gender influnced by it, ADHDgender is exclusive to people with ADHD/ADD/VASTism

History

ADHDgender and the flag were first coined through a page on the LGBTA Wiki by FANDOM user Oog22 on July 8 2020.[1] On October 14 2020 an alternative ADHDgender flag was coined by an anonymous FANDOM user, also through a page edit.[3] On June 10 2021, a third alternative flag was coined on the same page by FANDOM user Betacherub combining the original two flags.

Controversy

Most controversy centers around the idea that a gender tied to ADHD is insulting and trivializes the disorder. Given that ADHDgender was coined by people with ADHD, and is exclusively used by people with ADHD, this argument falls flat. Additionally, though the word "ADHDgender" has not been scientifically studied, it has been proven that ADHD can and does influence gender. People with ADHD are over 6 times more likely than their non-ADHD counterparts to be gender variant, proving a clear correlation between ADHD and gender variance.[4] Additionally, the fact that there are numerous people who identity with ADHDgender is in itself strong anecdotal evidence for this relationship.
