Demigender is an umbrella term for gender identities which have a partial connection to a certain gender. It can describe those who feel the barest connections to a gender, but not enough to fully identify as that gender. Demigender individuals may identify as another gender in combination with demigender. Demigender can also be an identity in itself, for individuals who feel a partial connection to the concept of gender in general. The opposite of demigender is hypergender.

Being demigender does not necessarily mean that one is partially a given gender and partially agender (though it can be). One can be, for example, a demiboy and a demigirl at the same time, meaning part of one's gender is boy and the other part is a girl. The "other part" of one's gender can be any gender or combination of genders.

Etymology

From demi- ("partial") + gender

Pronunciation

  • Phonetic: /deh-mee-jen-der/
  • IPA: /ˈdɛ.miˈd͡ʒɛn.dɚ/

Definitions

  • I said to myself that I can any word relate to me if I just stick a "demi-" in front of it. And then I realised that it might actually help me find a word for my gender identity. I've felt for some time that I may have too much of the masculine element in me to call myself agender and feel good about it — so maybe it would be a nice idea to call myself a demiguy. - Bad Patient, 2010[1]

History

The earliest use of a gender under the demigender umbrella was on August 13th, 2010 by AVEN user Bad Patient in the TransWhatevers forum where they describe themself as a demiguy.[1] Shortly after on December 11th, 2020, AVEN user bristrek posted on the TransWhatevers forum asking if anyone had more info on the term demigirl[2] which they had found on the Yada Wiki.[3] Demigirl and demiguy were both added to the AVEN Gender Definitions Masterlist on December 12th, 2010.[4] A demigender flag was created on July 9th, 2016 by an anonymous user.[5]
