This page details a hate group or another form of harmful group that threatens LGBTQIA+ people and/or their allies, and it is hosted on the Wiki for the sake of public education. An exclusionist (also known as Exclus, Exclu, or Reactionary Exclusionist Gatekeeper (REG) is a person who believes in excluding a portion of the LGBTQ+ community, and usually attempts to justify this by claiming those portions are not actually valid members of the community.

Statistics

In 2017, a survey conducted on Tumblr examined the common age range of exclusionists:[1]

For those explicitly identifying as exclusionists

3.1% are under 15 years old 24.6% are 15-16 years old 30.8% are 17-18 years old 20% are 19-20 years old 15.4% are 21-25 years old 4.6% are 26-30 years old 1.5% are 46-50 years old (Note: only one respondent identifies as exclusionist and is 46-50 years of age). 58.5% of those identifying as exclusionists are 18 years or younger. 6.1% are over 25 years of age. The single largest age group is 17-18 years old.

Controversy

Exclusionists may harass, threaten, or make parodies of the groups they exclude to mock their identities. It is an integral part of being an exclusionist to doubt that other people are labeling themselves correctly. This may include drawing cariactures, drawing artwork depicting those groups being harmed, screenshotting people's posts as a "flop," or other forms of harassment.

MOGAI-Watch, a formerly popular Tumblr exclusionist, was a cis woman who ran a blog and website dedicated to mocking nonbinary people. She notably used ableism, racism, lesbiphobia, and other forms of bigotry as her basis when describing "MOGAI" terms.

Popular Instagram exclusionist flamingdiscourse has been transphobic, racist, and harassed others.[citation needed]

Perceptions and Discrimination

Beliefs

Exclusionists may hold a number of beliefs, including but not limited to:

  • Trans women are not women and trans men are not men
  • Nonbinary genders are not real
  • Pan is an invalid orientation (often extending to omni, ply, and other mspec orientations)
  • Neopronouns are harmful/not valid/were coined to mock trans people

Or gatekeeping and fakeclaiming in other ways.

Community

Exclusionist communities largely exist online. In an offline context, many of the identities they exclude and make claims about are openly accepted by LGBTQ+ organizations.

Subsets

TERF

TERFs are Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminists. They assert that trans women are not women, and often claim that all transfeminine people have intentions to sexually assault cis women. A subset, SWERFs are Sex Worker Exclusionary Radical Feminists. They harass sex workers in the name of feminism, claiming that sex workers are the reason feminism is respected societally. Another related group, TEHMs, are Trans Exclusionary Homosexual Males, cis men who harass trans men, claiming that they are "Invading" gay spaces and "deceiving" gay men into getting into relationships or sleeping with them. They commonly misgender trans men, and harass them if they use "gay" to describe themselves.

An mspec exclusionist is a variety of exclusionist that typically targets pan, ply, omni and other mspec orientations, and sometimes stellians as well. They may sometimes label themselves as "anti mspec,"[2] possibly out of a lack of awareness of what mspec means and that bisexuality is mspec.

Battleaxe Bi

Battleaxe Bi is a slang phrase and exclusionist identity label for a panphobic bisexual who believes that pan is an invalid orientation, and that all mspec orientations are actually just bi. The terms Longsword Lesbian and Gravity Knife Gay were coined to compliment it.

Aspec exclusionists believe that aspec identities (such as aromantic, asexual, etc) either are not "true" members of the LGBTQ+ community, experience straight privilege, or are otherwise invalid. They may also claim that "aspec" refers to the autism spectrum and those who use the word to refer to anattractional identities are ableist. The aspec exclusionist movement is largely online, and often garners support by TERFs. Offline, aspec identities are largely accepted by LGBTQ+ organizations.
