Neutrois is an abinary gender that is neutral, null, and/or genderless.

Etymology

The term is derived from the Latin root neuter and French "trois," meaning three.[2]

Definitions

History

Neutrois was originally coined by Holly A. Burnham in 1995, supposedly via a Usenet group, although the exact post has not been recovered.[1]

In 2014, neutrois was one of 50 gender options added on the social networking site Facebook.[4]

In 2018, Washington state began to allow "X" gender markers on official documents, with the law mentioning neutrois. Quote, "Changing sex designation on a birth certificate..."X" means a gender that is not exclusively male or female, including, but not limited to, intersex, agender, amalgagender, androgynous, bigender, demigender, female-to-male, genderfluid, genderqueer, male-to-female, neutrois, nonbinary, pangender, third sex, transgender, transsexual, Two Spirit, and unspecified."[5]

The original flags meanings are white for neutral, unidentified, or questioning gender, dark chartreuse green as the inverse of lavender, representing disconnect from the binary, and black for being agender or genderless.[7]
